The Bokashi kitchen composter

These kitchen composters are a practical and convenient way of transforming your kitchen food waste, including cooked and uncooked meat, into a nutrient rich soil conditioner. The single kit comprise a sealable bin (made from 80% recycled plastic), a drainage tap fitting and inner drain tray, and includes a 600g bag of EM (Effective Micro-Organism) Bokashi bran to create the ideal conditions for airtight (anaerobic) composting. The bins can be stored in the kitchen (we keep ours under the sink) but could be kept practically anywhere in the house.

Bokashi composting FAQs

Q:  Where does the word/term Bokashi come from?
A:  It's a Japanese farming term meaning 'fermented organic matter'.
Q:  What is the Bokashi mix?
A:  The mix we sell with our kitchen composters is comprised of bran and molasses which has been mixed with a liquid form of EM1 (Effective Micro-organisms). They are natural organisms which break down the waste in the Bokashi bucket, and to work effectively must not be exposed to the air.
Q:  How do I know if my Bokashi bin is working correctly?
A:  The first thing you will probably notice is the smell. It shouldn't smell foul, but will take on a strong, but not unpleasant fermented vinegar odour. You may also notice a pale coloured fungus - this is normal.
Q:  My Bokashi composter smells foul, and has black fungus all over it. What should I do?
A:  The first thing to note is that bad smelling and black fungus means either too much liquid has got into the Bokashi or not enough Bokashi mix has been used when layering waste in your bin. You will need to start again with a fresh bin. You can turn the contents out and mix into the garden compost or dig a hole (about a foot deep) and bury it - but make sure it's not sited near young saplings or plants with tender roots as the liquid or 'tea' produced by this process is acidic.
Q:  What's the most common mistake I can make sure I don't repeat?
A:  A lot of the time if your kitchen composter fails it's because you need to compress your kitchen waste each time you put some in the bin. This ensures air is forced out, and makes more contact with the Bokashi bran as it's layered.
Q:  How do I clean my Bokashi bin when it's been emptied?
A: I use a bowl of water and elbow grease, but you could mix the water with a little soap. Try not to rely on using any heavy-duty bio cleaners - it's a bit OTT. Once it's clean, leave it upside down in the sun or a warm area, to drain and dry off.
Q:  Can I combine the Bokashi bin contents into my wormery?
A: Yes you can. But bear in mind the material can be acidic (normally lasting about a week until it neutralises when dug in). However, many people have had no such problems when using with a wormery. Some people use a layer of crushed egg shells to help neutralise the acidity.
